The First Step and Livewire Records. It seemed like a match made in heaven. Ed was in Hands Tied, The First Step loved Mouthpiece. Ed and Co put out great records, The First Step created great records. It was a good combo. Hell, the shirts even looked chill. Take this shirt from fordapunks. That’s just a solid shirt. A dash of Turning Point, and plenty of crucial. Just a solid look, despite being a navy blue shirt. White and red ink on navy is a crucial look though, I’ll give it that. It makes me think of long van rides sitting around with friends. Not worrying about the next gig, not stressing over previous shit, just living in the moment and having fun. I can dig that vibe.

When Things Go Right
We came down pretty hard on flamestillxburns the other day for butchering some amazing tees. Turning an XL tee into a 3/4 sleeve baby tee is … deplorable. But this auction makes up for that. What you’ll see here is size SMALL tees. In a giant lot. That’s 7 tshirts and 3 hoods. You can’t eff with that, great lot. Verse, Betrayed, The First Step, Joy Division, Road Rage, Late Night Wars, … Lots of good stuff. Including the Crisis Of Conformity tee … Check It…
WTF is going on here?
We have all seen our share of cut, rolled and tailored shirts, but for the love of God flamestillxburns please tell us what is going on with these XLs tailored to smalls with 3/4 sleeves. No thanks, I don’t need your rags.
A Journey Of One Thousand Miles …
… begins with a single step. This quote is attributed to an ancient poet, Lao Tzu, who is sometimes known as Laozi. 6th century BC. So way back. This person (at one point, I’m sure this individual was probably a person) is an honored figure in Taoism, and is held as a deity by modern Daoists. The translations for the phrase are a little different and in some, the journey begins with THE FIRST STEP! I’m not sure who, if anyone, in The First Step was a practicing Taoist, but the saying rings true regardless. I can think of at least 3 religions practiced by the members of TFS. Who knew these boys were such holy rollers?
Head over to speak_out’s auctions. I would consider this dude to have the 2nd or 3rd best First Step collection. Behind Mr Dylan Press, of course. And possibly some of the dudes in the band. Honestly, I’m not sure how deep their collections are at this point. But speak_out definitely has gems.
The First Step
I’m still a big fan of crewneck sweatshirts (even navy blue ones, I suppose). I’m also a big fan of this seller: razorwristedkid1. Over the years, I’ve bought AND sold many items to this dude. I’ve shipped them to his hood in North Dakota and a few others spots all over the world. Good dude and a quality seller. Good times.
But I Really, REALLY Need Those … Sigh.
Hey, what’s going on here? Seller sugarnbullets has up some real gems, but here’s the catch. “Selling my husband’s rare hardcore shirts.” WHAAAAAAA? How’s this happen? Don’t they have a room in their house dedicated to storing all their old tshirts and band merch? That’s the only way to do it. This sets a bad precedent for all wives and husbands everywhere. Don’t get any ideas, Melissa. Our loss, your gain :)
Wallingford KOC
Lets talk about this show.
May 24, 2002 @ KOC Wallingford CT: Busted, the Heist, Carry The Torch, Say Goodbye, The First Step , Champion, What Feeds The Fire
7 years 364 days ago. Think about that. The Wallingford KOC always had a great vibe. The town was tiny with bricked crosswalks. Very homey. Cops would always be driving by making sure the situation was under control. But I don’t ever recall being hassled or even given the hairy eye. Very chill scene. You’d walk in the front door, and hang a left. If you went straight, you had to go downstairs to play poker with the members of the club. Real open club venue. No real stage, plenty wide. But someone would inevitably end up diving off a folding table holding up the PA system. Good move.
I honestly can’t even remember who the opening bands were. Busted? The Heist? I recall Carry The Torch, but I can’t really place them. Say Goodbye was definitely a chill band. Dudes went on to be in many excellent bands. Currently? Waste Managment.
Of course The First Step is chill. This could have been one of their first northeast shows, but don’t quote me on that. They got a great response. Kids were feeling it. This may have been one of Champion’s earliest east coast gigs too. Again, don’t quote. But I also recall kids LOVING it.
And What Feeds The Fire. These guys were essentially on their home turf. Ok, CT is figuratively a million miles away from Providence, but they always rolled with a solid crew. Kids came out for this gig and showed lots of love.
Overall? Great gig.
** Yes, I realize these are pics of Verse and Soul Control tees. There are no What Feeds The Fire tees on ebay now. Actually, you hardly ever see any xWFTFx on ebay …
*** Yes, I realize today is the 23 and the show occurred on the 24th. That’s why I didn’t say “8 years ago …” Continue reading
Slept On Shirt
Ever slept on picking up a shirt? I did. I always wanted one of these TFS Crew shirts on a white tee. I saw TFS a bunch when they had them. For some reason, I never picked one up. I always figured, I’ll get it the next time they come around.
Guess what? They stopped coming around eventually, and I missed the boat. That ship sailed.
Oooofff such a dumb move on my part.
This time around mikexfs has one up. But it’s a black tee. I want a white one. Actually, what I’d really like is a white ONE sided shirt. Now I’ve never considered myself “TFS Crew,” but I sure would rock the hell out of a tee like that.
Make sure to hit up Merch Direct to pick up old TFS gear. Those dudes would appreciate it.
The First Step red long sleeve
“True colors will always show…”
Great band, good dudes, TONS of merch. They were always coming out with different colors and designs. This is a cool “What We Know” long sleeve which looks kinda like the Hands Tied long sleeve I posted earlier. Different band, but still a good look.
The First Step/Damage Control shorts
Did you get a chance to see Damage Control on tour with The First Step and Hands Tied(reunion)? These were great energy filled shows where everyone was your friend. Even if you did catch these shows, I am sure you didn’t get your hands on these shorts. Printer’s mistake shorts is what I will call them. Grab these, and you can wear them when your Stop and Think shorts are in the wash.
